iOS 26.4: The AI Waiting Game Continues (But There’s Still Plenty to Like)

New Features in iOS 26.4

Meta Description: iOS 26.4 is here, but where is the Siri we were promised? We dive into Playlist Playground, CarPlay AI, and whether this update is actually worth your time.

Let’s address the elephant in the room before we even get to the “Install” button. We are now well into the iOS 26 lifecycle, and the “New Siri”—the one that was supposed to actually understand context and manage our lives with human-like grace—is still nowhere to be found. For many of us, downloading iOS 26.4 feels a bit like showing up to a party where the guest of honor texted to say they’re “running late” for the fourth time in a row. It’s frustrating, it’s a bit exhausting, and it makes the “Intelligence” branding feel more like a roadmap than a reality.

However, once you move past the Siri-shaped hole in this update, iOS 26.4 actually turns out to be one of the most stable and utility-focused mid-cycle releases we’ve seen in years. Apple is finally filling in the gaps with features that actually impact how you use your phone daily—from fixing the keyboard lag that’s been driving us crazy to a massive security shift that protects your data by default. It might not be the revolution we were promised, but it’s the refinement we actually needed.

Tier 1: The Headline Features

These are the changes that justify the 1.5GB download. They aren’t just “tweaks”; they change the functional “verbs” of your iPhone.

Playlist Playground: AI for Your Ears (US Only)

Apple Music is finally taking a page out of the “algorithmic discovery” playbook with Playlist Playground. This is a dedicated space within the Music app where you can use natural language prompts to generate highly specific playlists. You can tell it to “Create a 90s grunge mix for a rainy drive through the Pacific Northwest,” and it does a surprisingly decent job of mixing hits with deep cuts.

The Verdict: It’s fun, but it feels like a beta. The logic is sound, but the “US Only” restriction is a massive bummer for international subscribers who pay the same monthly fee. It’s a great way to break out of your musical bubble, but I suspect most people will use it three times and then go back to their “Favorites” mix.

CarPlay AI Integration: The Passenger You Actually Want

CarPlay just got a massive brain transplant. iOS 26.4 introduces CarPlay AI, allowing you to interact with Claude, Gemini, or ChatGPT directly through your car’s interface. Crucially, this is voice-only. You can’t ask it to roll down the windows or check your oil (Apple still keeps vehicle controls locked down), and there is no “Hey Siri” style wake word for these third-party bots—you have to trigger them manually.

The Take: This is a huge win for long commutes. Asking Claude to summarize a long PDF or having ChatGPT brainstorm dinner ideas while you’re stuck in traffic is genuinely useful. It’s Apple admitting that while Siri is still “finding herself,” other LLMs are ready to work right now.

Stolen Device Protection: No More Opting In

This is the “boring but vital” update of the year. Stolen Device Protection is now enabled by default for all users. Previously, you had to hunt through settings to turn this on. Now, if your phone is in an unfamiliar location, it mandates a FaceID scan and a one-hour delay for sensitive changes (like changing your Apple Account password).

The Take: About time. Given how many “shoulder surfing” thefts have occurred in major cities, making this the default behavior is a massive win for user safety. It’s the kind of feature you hope you never need, but you’ll be incredibly glad it’s there if you do.

Tier 2: Notable Improvements

These are the “Quality of Life” updates. Individually, they’re small. Collectively, they make the iPhone feel significantly more polished.

Video Podcasts: YouTube, but for your Library

Apple Podcasts now supports HLS-based video streaming and full download support. If you follow creators who record in-studio, you no longer have to hop over to YouTube to see the visual gags or guest reactions. It’s seamless, and the “Picture-in-Picture” mode works flawlessly. It turns the Podcast app from an audio player into a genuine media hub.

The Keyboard Accuracy Fix

If you’ve felt like your typing has become “clumsier” over the last six months, it wasn’t just you. iOS 26.4 includes a specific fix for keyboard accuracy during fast typing. Apple hasn’t been specific about what changed, but in my testing, the autocorrect logic for rapid-fire “fat-fingering” feels much more intuitive. It’s the most underrated part of this update.

Purchase Sharing Separation

Family Sharing used to be an “all or nothing” deal. If you wanted to share your Apple TV+ subscription, you often ended up sharing your credit card for every single app purchase your teenager made. Now, you can separate Purchase Sharing. You can share subscriptions and media without necessarily being the sole payer for every 99-cent microtransaction in the household.

Liquid Glass & New Emoji

Apple is doubling down on display aesthetics with the Reduce Bright Effects setting for “Liquid Glass” wallpapers. It tones down the harshness of the HDR elements, making your lock screen feel more sophisticated and less like a neon sign. And yes, we got 8 new emoji—the Sasquatch and the Trombone are the clear winners here.

Tier 3: The Quick Hits

For the power users who want to know every single line item, here is the “best of the rest” in iOS 26.4:

FeatureWhat it does
Reminders “Urgent”A new smart section that automatically pulls in tasks due within 3 hours.
Ambient Music WidgetA beautiful, minimalist 2×2 widget that shows what’s playing with a live waveform.
Health Bedtime MetricShows your “average bedtime consistency” over a 7-day rolling period.
Camera Audio ZoomImproved directional microphones that focus on the person you’re zooming in on.
Offline Music RecognitionShazam in Control Center now tags songs while offline and syncs when you’re back on Wi-Fi.
Hotspot Data MoveThe Hotspot data usage counter has moved from ‘Cellular’ to its own dedicated ‘Hotspot’ menu.
Shortcuts Charge LimitYou can now automate your phone to stop charging at 80% or 90% via a Shortcut.

The Verdict: To Update or Not?

Should you install iOS 26.4 today? Yes.

While the lack of a “Siri 2.0” remains a sore spot, the security fixes alone make this a mandatory update. Apple patched over 35 vulnerabilities in this release. None were being actively exploited in the wild (yet), but it’s a significant enough house-cleaning that you shouldn’t stay on 26.3 longer than necessary.

Beyond security, the keyboard fix and the Stolen Device Protection defaults are “invisible” features that just make the iPhone a better tool. If you’re in the US, Playlist Playground is a fun weekend distraction, and for commuters, the CarPlay AI integration is a genuine game-changer for productivity.

Compatibility: iOS 26.4 is available for the iPhone 11 and later.

What’s Next? Early rumors for iOS 26.5 suggest that Apple is finally prepping the “Siri Pro” beta for a late spring release. We’ve heard that before, but with the foundation laid in 26.4, the stage is finally set for the AI to actually show up.
