Beneath the surface, however, lies a sharply satirical voice which looks ahead in part to later novels such as Devils. After years of absence, Mordasov is shocked by the arrival of a wealthy, aging landowner, Prince K-. But in her efforts to build such an alliance, she must contend with rival matchmakers and Zeena's savagery. Written shortly after Dostoevsky was released from prison, The uncle's dream has little in common with The pessimistic tone of The novel that inspired "The House of The Dead," and contains plenty of light living-room farce. Beneath the surface, however, is a shrill satirical voice that in some ways looks forward to later novels, such as The Devil.
