Weightlifting ? Take Your Fitness to the Next Level

The Weightlifting equipment is basically of two types- free weights and machines. Free weights are not attached to any cables, pulleys, or weight stacks. Hence, they are called free weights. They serve as basic bodybuilding equipment. Olympic Barbell is a long iron bar that is usually 4-7 feet long and has weight plates placed on either side of the bar. Exercises are performed using both hands to lift the barbell in repetitions and sets. Barbells are available in various forms, the longest of which is the Olympic barbell which is 7 feet long and weighs around 45 lbs. Such barbells can bear weights of up to 800 lbs. Small barbells are also available in the gym and they are around 4 feet long and can bear weights of around 20lbs or higher. These are mainly used to perform barbell curls, shoulder presses, and bent rows.


The Standard Barbell is usually 1 inch thick and 5-6 feet long and are available for sale in department stores. These are well-suited for a home gym setting. A dumbbell is a miniature barbell that is usually 10-15 inches long. Exercises are performed using one dumbbell in each hand. The fixed weight dumbbells have fixed weights that cannot be changed. They are available for use in gyms and come in an assortment of weights ranging from 5-100lbs or more. There are the adjustable dumbbells as well that have small collars that clip and hold weight plates on either side of the dumbbell. They are much cheaper than fixed weight dumbbells and are easier to store. These are good for a home gym setting.


Weight Training ? A Way of Life

Weight training uses external weight in the form of equipment to create tension. It is this tension that is responsible for making a person fit and muscular through repeated exercising. Some of the equipment used is as follows.


Weight Plates are the plates that are placed on either side of barbells. They are made of iron and are available in weights that range from 2.5-100lbs. For serving home use purpose, plastic weight plates are available. They are just fine for beginners but cannot be used for higher weights since the thickness of the plastic limits the space available on a barbell. Weight plates used in gyms are made of iron and are available in 2 forms. The Olympic weight plates are used on Olympic barbells and standard plates for the standard size barbells. Such plates allow changing of weights for people who perform different kinds of weight lifting exercises.


The EZ Curl Bar is used for working out the biceps and triceps. It is good for working the muscles from multiple angles and has angled hand placements for better grip. It is shorter than a barbell and reduces stress on the wrists as compared to a straight barbell.
