The modern-day kitchen is incomplete without a mixer. These important appliances for the home are an integral component of people's daily lives, considerably cutting down the time needed to manually stir, blend or mix foodstuffs. Mixers operate via a gear-driven mechanism that enhances the efficiency of performing repetitive tasks such as stirring, whisking or beating and saves time and energy and in most cases, results in a superior preparation than that achieved by manual methods. Modern day mixers are designed to perform a multitude of tasks apart from mixing and blending, such as grinding or kneading. These gadgets are small, easy to use and provide a hassle-free environment in the kitchen, saving time and energy. Newer versions of mixers are compact and portable and can be used for a wide range of culinary operations.
Mixers are also more desirable as it generally provides a homogenous and even end product than that achieved through manual labor. Mixers can be electric or mechanical, the former being driven by a source of electricity while the latter is driven manually by hand. Mechanical mixers are more commonly used as juice makers, where a lot of force is not needed to be applied. They provide a satisfactory result and do not consume any electricity. Electric mixers, driven by electric motors are generally preferred for heavy duty work, which is significantly difficult to achieve through manual labor or mechanical mixers. Electric mixers are also faster. The electric motor moves the blades at a high speed which reduce the time of operation drastically.
Electric mixers may be handheld or over the counter stand models. These mixers use electricity to drive an electric motor that is rigged with the blades of the mixer. Many companies nowadays provide multiple functionalities of their mixers, which can be used exclusively as a juicer, mixer or grinder. Some juicers also come with a sieved container that can be used to separate the juice from the seeds of the fruits used.
Operating electric mixers is very simple. Most electric mixers come with pre-programmed modes of operation which changes the speed of the motor. Different speeds are suitable for different purposes, such as juicing or whipping, and this can be easily achieved through these mixers. Stand mixers generally have a large container within which the blades of the mixer rotate. Spiral mixers are used for mixing dough wherein a spiral shaped agitator is held stationary and the container is moved relative to it. The most common stand mixers are the planetary types where the container is stationary and the agitator is moved around. These mixers are much more versatile in function than spiral mixers and can be used for whipping and blending. Handheld mixers are much more portable and can be easily carried, although they cannot be used to perform heavy duty mixing and grinding. It consists of a handle which is held over any suitable container, while the blades are immersed into the food for mixing.
