Getting into the World of Trading Cards

Listing down the most popular trading card games around

Trading cards – many people love them and many people collect them. This widely popular hobby among the youth is hitting its golden age as more Filipinos are getting hooked into their gameplay and mechanics. And with most of their fans already becoming adults, it just means that today’s youth could also start collecting and battling with their friends using these unique games. This blog lists some of the most popular trading card games that have left their mark in the industry.

1. Magic the Gathering –

Known as the OG of the TCG world, Magic the Gathering (or Magic Cards to Filipinos) is THE card game to play, since so many players have been hooked on this hobby for decades. First released in 1993 by Wizards of the Coast, this card game pretty much ties the traditional table-top game with cards. Roleplaying is a key element with Magic, with some players having played this for many years and have memorized this gameplay. If you are willing to dive into trading cards as a hobby, you’ll eventually get yourself hooked with Magic the Gathering.

2. Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters –

If you ever hear the term trading cards, you’ll probably hear Yu-Gi-Oh more times than ever. Known as the medium that made trading cards mainstream, the Yu-Gi-Oh! Franchise has attracted more casual players than ever. First started in Japan circa 1999 and released worldwide in 2002, this card game lets newcomers experience summoning monsters and battling. Now celebrating its 20th year, Yu-Gi-Oh continues to be the most popular game for casuals, with a solid competitive scene that continues to be a staple for more people.

3. Pokémon: The Trading Card Game –

Pokémon may be more recognized through their anime and videogames but its TCG scene is still a popular pastime for many. The Pokémon card game scene is more known for its trading aspect than its competitive side, due to fans wanting to own cards of their favorite Pocket Monsters and characters. This also makes Pokémon a lucrative hobby, with some of their rare cards costing more money than ever! (Just ask Logan Paul.)

4. The Digimon Card Game –

Not to be outdone by its counterpart, the Digital Monsters are also gaining steam with their trading card game. The Digimon card game has seen its gameplay renewed several times throughout the years, with its current iteration putting its own spin on monster battling and card games. Players can now “raise” their cards and Digivolve them into stronger monsters that you can battle against players. This card game is the newest addition to the hobby and anyone can jump in to learn how to play this game.

5. CardFight!! Vanguard –

Developed by Bushiroad in 2010, this anime-turned-trading card game is considered to be a niche among TCG players. While not as popular as the other games, CardFight!! Vanguard still has a solid fanbase of players that have been playing this for years. Combining the elements of Magic and Yu-Gi-Oh!, you can see lore and story-telling with this game, while also enjoying the monster-battle aspect with your friends.

The trading card game scene has been around for decades now, with many fans of all ages still playing these games for a long time. Anyone can jump into this trendy hobby and be among the thousands of enthusiasts that trade and play against each other. Here in the Philippines, the top online shopping platform has its trading cards available just for you.
