MANILA, PHILIPPINES - Payday has often been touted as a time of increased spending power for the Filipino worker. But research reveals that payday is more about food than anything else. In an online survey of 345 respondents, Lazada Market Intelligence discovered that 47.4% of workers spend more on food during payday vs. 41% who spend the same. 26% of respondents spend 50% more and 21% claiming to spend up to twice as much for their payday meals.
The payday meal is deeply ingrained in the Filipino psyche with 55% of respondents reporting that they spend their first paycheck on treating their family to a lunch or dinner, while 37.5% immediately associate any bonus salary to treating their family to a meal. This tradition is so prevalent that 20% of respondents actually dread family and friends asking for a payday “blowout.”
Where do the rest of one’s earnings go? Bills. Bills. Bills. 74% of respondents immediately think of bills to pay every 15th and 30th. 88% of respondents say that bills (electricity, water, phone, rent, credit card) take up the bulk of their salaries. It doesn't help that 54% of respondents have experienced salary deduction due to lateness or absence, reducing their spending power even further.
It also doesn't help that consumer spending is hampered by existing infrastructure. It's tough to get cash and spend it! 40% of respondents consider long lines at the ATM as the biggest hassle during payday. 24% said that payday traffic bothers them most while 15% mention that mall overcrowding is a deterrent to enjoyable paydays.
Meanwhile, internal Lazada data shows that majority of shoppers are females during the 15th and 30th, with the most number of items sold in the health and beauty category. While getting bills out of the way is top priority, people still allocate a little extra for the small ticket essentials to look and feel good about themselves.
In light of more bills and a tougher retail environment, the role of e-commerce now goes beyond just a convenience option - it is emerging as the solution to all limitations Filipinos experience during payday. MANILA, PHILIPPINES - Lazada Philippines (www.lazada.com.ph) held a thanksgiving dinner and recognition ceremony for the culmination of their “Affiliate Online Revolution” contest last January 22, 2016 at the Asian Institute of Management Conference Center.
The contest called on all new and existing affiliates to step up to the challenge of generating the most number of sales for Lazada from October to December 2015. Cash prizes amounting to one million pesos were given away to top performing affiliates. Michelle Ng, who operates Discount Group Asia, was awarded Php 200,000 for being the overall top performer. Winners for the other rounds were also awarded with cash prizes as high Php 150,000 each.
The commission that the affiliate program has extended doubled in the last two months making potential and current affiliates more driven to earn extra money in promoting Lazada. Marc Farrales, a full time IT programmer and the contest’s overall top 2 performer, earned an average of Php 60,000 for the past two months compared to his average commission of Php 10,000 monthly before the competition. His strategy is to maximize the use of Facebook groups in pushing promotions.

MANILA, PHILIPPINES – In an online survey of over 300 respondents, only a third (36%) of Filipinos are really happy with their Valentine’s Day gifts. Less than half (46%) said that they were satisfied while 3% expressed absolute dissatisfaction.
The survey, conducted by Lazada (www.lazada.com.ph) , explored the processes and reasons for the lack of contentment over Valentine’s Day gifts.
Almost one in four respondents (23%) expressed that chocolates and couple’s shirts are cliché, but the most cliché gifts are picture frames with over 40% of people agreeing they are passé. On the other hand, over 30% of respondents agree that flowers are a must have, beating out chocolates (19%), stuffed toys (9.6%). Surprisingly, more and more people (15%) see gadgets as an essential gift for the month of romance.
It seems surprise gifts are falling out of fashion as an overwhelming 86% of respondents prefer to express to their partners what they want. This transparency between couples extends to finding deals. 65% of respondents said they don’t mind sharing that they got their gifts on sale. The implicit learning is that if you get your partner the gift they want, it doesn’t matter if you got it on discount.
The survey also explored love in the digital space. Overtly expressing affection over social media or “Online PDA” seems acceptable with 52% of respondents saying they practice social media PDA themselves. However, when it comes to meeting love interests online, half of the respondents had hesitations with online dating. 51% agreed with the statement: “Online shopping never hurt anyone, people do.” Talk about #hugot.

In an online survey of over 500 Filipinos, 58% of respondents admit to using mobile phones to end relationships.

When it comes to developing relationships online profiling has become a standard practice. 54% of respondents check a potential date's social media profile before going out on one. Online research and dating is now so intertwined that even if they like someone in person, 60% of people have said that they lost interest after doing more research on social media.
Even after breaking up, more than half of the respondents (52%) report stalking their ex's social media page.
While breakups are tough, 1 out of every 3 respondents, ended up getting back together with their ex.
How to get back together? Trust is one important factor. Almost 65% of respondents say they share their email, phone and app passwords with their significant other.
